Arlesheim, Birseck and Reichenstein

Arlesheim (Canton Basel-Landschaft) is a village with the world’s largest cathedral. The cathedral and the surrounding palaces for the canons were built in 1678.

A century later, in 1785, the “solitude romantique prèd d’Arlesheim”, the Arlesheim Hermitage, was founded. This English garden was laid out around the ruins of the medieval castles of Birseck and Reichenstein.

Birseck

Reichenstein

Both castles have been renovated in the last hundred years. Birseck Castle is the eye-catcher of the Ermitage. The neo-Gothic frescoes have recently been restored to their original state. The castle is open to the public. Reichenstein Castle is run by a foundation.
