Museum of Ethnography Basel

Initially, it was mainly private collectors who travelled across the continents with their own funds in the nineteenth century, bringing interesting objects and testimonies of indigenous daily culture to Basel.

What began as a small collection within the framework of a universal museum increasingly developed into a source of scientific work. The result is the Museum der Kulturen Basel, an ethnological museum with an international reputation.

The collection of more than 320,000 objects is impressive and of world renown. It contains (art) objects from Europe, Africa, America, Oceania and Asia.

In addition to ethnographic works, there is a collection of around 50,000 historical photographs.
