The museum (Historisches Museum) houses a diverse collection of historical and cultural artefacts in three buildings.
The site on the Barfüsserkirche presents the (archaeological) history of Basel from prehistoric times to the present. It houses a wide range of artefacts both sacred and secular and several self-contained collections such as the Basel Cathedral Treasury dating back to the 11th century and the 16th-century Amerbach Cabinet.
The works of pre-Reformation sacred art such as the Basel Dance of Death, the Basel Cathedral Treasury and the section called «Understanding the World» installed in the basement, show a magnificent array of medieval artefacts. The Renaissance and Baroque collections are grouped . Highlights are the coin cabinet and Burgundian Booty.
The Haus zum Kirschgarten shows a mansion worthy of wealth and status in the 18th and 19th centuries. The mansion has been a museum of domestic culture since 1951. Most of the interior is devoted to 18th- and 19th-century period rooms formerly inhabited by Basel’s affluent bourgeoisie
The museum of Music (Musikmuseum) boasts some 650 European instruments spanning five centuries of music history from the oldest drum dating from 1571 and a highly ornate viola da gamba by Joachim Tielke (ca. 1704) to the Weber Unika Orchestrion of 1925.
