The Arenenberg Castle was home to Hortense de Beauharnais, adoptive daughter and sister-in-law of napoleon I, from 1817 on. She completely redesigned Arenenberg in the French fashion.

Even the interior was decorated with wallpapers, furniture, statues, and paintings commemorating Napoleon I. Her son Louis Napoléon, the future Emperor Napoleon III, grew up there. In 1906, Empress Eugénie donated Castle Arenenberg and its estate to the canton of Thurgovia.

Hortense de Beauharnais knew how to revive the Parisian society at lake Constance and the castle was visited by the most important representatives of the world of music, literature, art and politics.

The castle is open to a step back in time to the beginning of the 19th century. The museum Thurgau is the only museum in the German-speaking realms dedicated to Napoleonic history.
