The 500th anniversary of Canton Graubünden in the Albula Region

The Fundaziun Origen is also celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Republic of the Three Leagues (Freistaat der Drei Bünde) with an open-air theatre in the mountainous landscape of the Albula region.

The theme is the young republic’s struggle for freedom and autonomy, the fragility of democratic structures and the strength of a solid alliance that stands the test of time.

The play’s premiere occurs in the colourful Alpine autumn landscape at the foot of Lantsch, near the former Marienkirche church.

The view of the Crap Ses gorge highlights the importance of the old pass road. The Surses mountains stand out on the horizon and look like giant sculptures in the evening light.

The theatre highlights the decades before and after the alliance of 1524. It shows the struggle for power between the autonomous communities, the influential aristocracy and the European princes who managed to protect their interests in the young free state.
