The William Tell Chapel in Bürglen

The Chapel (Tellskapelle) in Bürglen (canton Uri), with frescoes dating from 1582, is located on the site where, according to legend, the home of the national hero once stood.

Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) made the legend famous in his book (1804) Wilhelm Tell.  The Tell learning trail (Tell Lehrpfad) quotes:

“Die Sonne blickt über die hohen Berggipfel auf die Waldstätten Uri, Schwyz und Unterwalden.

Das Licht fällt auf die dunklen Wälder und dringt nur ganz knapp in die tiefen, geheimnisvollen Täler. In dieser Zeit bringt jedoch der erste Sonnenstrahl grausige Bilder zum Vorschein.

Die Vögte des Kaisers treiben in der unschuldigen Landschaft ihr Unwesen. Vergewaltigung, Plünderung und Ausbeutung durch schwere Steuern und Bussen sind an der Tagesordnung.

Jedes Morgenrot bringt neue Schandtaten ans Licht, und die Leute rund um den Vierwaldstättersee leben in Angst und Not.

Gessler, der Tyrann sondergleichen, wütet in den Talern und lässt keinen Stein auf dem andern. Nur einige Männer wie der Tell wagen es, den Gräueltaten entgegenzutreten!”

Translation:

The sun shines brightly over the high mountain peaks onto the forest cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden.

 It casts its light onto the dense dark forests, barely reaching the low-lying mysterious valleys.

 Yet, in these times, the day’s first rays bring horrific scenes to light. The Emperor’s bailiffs are sowing the seeds of terror on this unsuspecting landscape. Rape, pillage and exploitation through heavy taxes and penalties are the order of the day.

 With every new dawn, new calamities come to light, and the people along the shores of Lake Lucerne live in fear and poverty.

 Baillif Gessler, a tyrant if ever there was one, rages through the lonely valleys, leaving no stone unturned. Few men dare to stand up to these atrocities, and William Tell is among them!
