The Glacier Garden Cavaglia

During the last ice age, about 11,000 years ago, the Palü glacier of the Pru Valley formed Vent the Cavaglia Plain (Piana di Cavaglia) in Valposchiavo (Italian-speaking part of the canton of Graubünden).

The melting of the glacier was accompanied by erosion due to the force of the meltwater and the rocks, sand masses and other objects carried away. This phenomenon (see also the Glacier Garden Luzern) created large glacier holes (Marmitte dei Giganti) and rock formations in the Cavagliasch Gorge (Forra del Cavagliasch).

The Association Glacier Garden Cavaglia (Verein Gletschergarten Cavaglia/ Associazione Giardino dei Ghiacciai Cavaglia, GGC), founded in 1998, has made this natural wonder accessible to the public.

From July 2021, a new walking path leads over rushing waterfalls and along rocky outcrops through the gorge. The path is made of local natural stone. The area is easily accessible from the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) station Cavaglia (1693 m).
