Reserve Kreisalpen

The reserve (canton of St. Gallen) covers 470 ha of forest. The capercaillie is the most impressive and rarest forest inhabitant in this reserve. The reserve is also a core habitat for the hazel grouse and black grouse.

The capercaillie needs mixed coniferous forests. The hazel grouse prefers dense young forests, and the black grouse is a resident of the forest edge zone.

The reserve is also home to the capercaillie, which is seriously threatened in Switzerland. With the forest reserves “Amden”, “Kreisalpen”, “Wengital-Regulastein”, “Moosbühel”, “Pardiel”, “Tamons”, and other project areas, the first important milestones have been set for the protection of this species.

The capercaillie is regarded as an indicator. If the capercaillie is doing well, the quality of its habitat is also good or sufficient for many other species.
