The Wettingen Monastery Museum

A visit to the monastery peninsula of Wettingen (Canton of Aargau) is an experience. The monastery has a medieval garden, Abbot’s house (Abthaus), with its terraced garden and an avenue of 200-year-old plane trees.

The garden with medical herbs illustrates the long tradition of monastic health care. The walk through the peninsula leads to the cultural trail along the Limmat river, the old spinning mill, and the wooden bridge.

The medieval Cistercian monastery and its 13th-century monastery church stand in the middle of the island. Monks and clergy used the monks’ church.  The Konversenkirche, the secular part of the monastery church, impresses with its beautiful altars and paintings.

The Roman-Gothic cloister of the monastery is famous for its stained-glass windows from the 13th to the 17th century. The idyllic monastery garden lies in the middle of the complex.

From 2 April 2022, Museum Aargau offers interactive exhibitions, guided tours and workshops on the themes of faith, power and knowledge in the monastery complex.
