Switzerland is a water-rich country. Lakes and rivers cover around 4% of its surface area, roughly 61,000km of rivers and streams, and around 1,500 lakes. Switzerland has 6% of Europe’s freshwater reserves.
The country is a huge reservoir in the continent’s heart, so it is also known as ‘the water castle of Europe’.
These reserves are fed by rainwater, spring water, and run-off from snow and glacier melt.
