The museum is housed in the Vidomnat and Majorie castles that dominate the historic centre of Sion. The museum is mainly devoted to art from the region and organizes exhibitions.

The museum is housed on a monumental site overlooking the city of Sion. The museum presents the prehistory and history of Valais and its inhabitants, Celts, Gallo-Romans, Alemans by a varied collection of (ancient, medieval and early modern) objects. documentation and (audiovisual) presentations.

The museum presents the evolution of the relationship between man and his environment, from the Mesolithic period to the present day.  

The museum presents the aristocratic life in and arround Solothurn in the eighteenth century.
