The University Library of Basel (Universitätsbibliothek Basel) is one of the most important public information centres in the region.
With a collection of around 7.5 million books as well as e-books, subject databases and journals, it is one of the largest academic libraries in Switzerland. It is also the library of the canton of Basel-Stadt.
It is the oldest secular library in Switzerland, mentioned for the first time in 1471. The university was founded in 1460. The library preserves a historical collection dating back to the 8th century.
The library also organises exhibitions and events.
